Insurance Information

Physical Therapy is considered an Allied Health Profession. A person can ONLY come to Physical Therapy with a referral and/or prescription from a physician (MD), dentist, osteopath (DO), nurse practitioner, physicians assistant (PA), or podiatrist (DPM). A referral from a chiropractor is not a legal referral.

NY State Direct Access for Physical Therapy is allowed under certain insurance companies. Currently, Medicare, Oxford, and Empire New York State Insurance all require you to have a prescription from a doctor in order to attend physical therapy. HIP Insurance requires an electronic referral from the Primary Care Physician (PCP). All other insurances will cover up to 10 visits or thirty (30) days, which ever comes first, before you have to be seen by a doctor. At Corso Physical Therapy, if we feel that you would best be treated by seeing a doctor or other medical professional who can write you a prescription, we will immediately refer you out to them. For more information about Direct Access, contact the APTA web site at www.APTA.org.

You are allowed to attend Physical Therapy (PT) at any practice of your choosing, not just the one the doctor recommends. It's your choice! A Physical Therapy office should be a place where you are comfortable knowing that you are being treated properly in a safe, clean environment with PT's who are licensed and very knowledgeable.

Many HMO's require you to have an authorization number from your primary care physician (PCP) and a prescription from your referring MD or specialist such as an orthopedist or neurologist. Contact your insurance carrier for more specific information about your benefits for physical therapy.

Before beginning a treatment program the patient should inquire about the PT facility:

  • Where is the office located? Most people want to be close to home for convenience but, it might be worthwhile to travel a bit further to get a PT who has more experience and specializes in the treatment of your condition.
  • Is your insurance accepted? Ask specific questions about your insurance plan. Call your insurance representative too.
  • What is the philosophy of the office Physical Therapists? Many patients assume that PT's will do massage therapy and that is not true.
  • Who will be treating you - Physical Therapists, assistants, or aides? Many facilities allow their aides to treat patients, or have newly graduated PT's with very little experience manage a complex case load of patients.
  • Make sure that a licensed PT is responsible for your treatment!!!!

Items to inquire about from your insurance company:

  • Is the facility in-network? Are you allowed to go out of network?
  • What is the deductible, co-payment, and/or co-insurance that has to be paid and how much are you responsible for?
  • What is the maximum PT benefit? Is it a number of visits per calendar year, per lifetime, or per condition?
  • Is there a time frame or limit to your benefits?

Remember: Your MD may recommend a Physical Therapist  to you, BUT you are allowed to go to the  PT office of your choice.

Participating Insurance Companies

The following is a list of Insurance Companies in which Corso PT is a participant. Please call if the insurance company you have is not on the list. This is a list of parent companies and many of them have subsidiaries. Please check here for updates, as the list changes periodically.

When your physician prescribes physical therapy, you must bring or have them FAX your prescription to the Corso facility that you will attend. Since not all insurance companies operate in the same way, please check with the company or your doctor to find out what must be approved or completed.
